PMP — The Global Heavyweight

Who it's for

PMP is the right choice if you already have real project management experience and want the single credential most recognized by employers globally. It signals that you can lead projects end-to-end across any methodology — predictive (waterfall), agile, or hybrid.

Prerequisites

• Secondary degree (high school) + 5 years of PM experience with 7,500 hours leading projects, OR
• Four-year degree + 3 years of PM experience with 4,500 hours leading projects
• 35 hours of formal PM education (most prep courses fulfill this)

Exam difficulty and format

PMP is among the hardest professional certification exams. As of the current exam version, roughly half the questions are agile or hybrid-focused — not just traditional waterfall project management. Questions are heavily scenario-based: you're presented with a situation and asked what a project manager "should do next." Memorizing process groups is not enough; you need to understand the underlying reasoning.

How to study

• Start with the PMI's Examination Content Outline (ECO) — it defines exactly what's tested.
• Complete an accredited 35-hour course to cover the PMBOK Guide 7th edition concepts and the Agile Practice Guide.
• Take at least 5–6 full mock exams (180 questions each) before the real test.

Practitioner is harder than Foundation but generally considered more accessible than PMP. All 68 questions are scenario-based and open-book — you can reference the official PRINCE2 manual during the exam. The challenge is speed: you have roughly 2 minutes per question and the manual only helps if you already know where to look.
